#WinterisComing (Too soon?)

The great thing about Texas is we get to experience all four seasons. (Sometimes all in the same week!) Summertime is for surfboards, 48-quart coolers, inner tubes, inflatable pools, and beach umbrellas. Winter is for weather-proof jackets, rain boots, cast iron firepits, snow skis, hunting gear and hidden Christmas gifts.

Don’t spend your whole summer tripping over your winter boots or staring at your snowboard propped in the garage. Make the most of this season and store those items in a self-storage unit! Summer is here and it’s time to ENJOY IT!

Winter clothing

Your storage unit is like a rotating, seasonal closet. Whatever you don’t need quick access to can be stored in it. *Pro tip: Give your stuff some serious TLC before storing it. That way, you won’t find any surprising stains later and all your stuff will be ready to wear when you need it!

Snow boots: Boots get a lot of tough love during the winter months. Make sure they look as good as new by brushing off excess dirt and giving them a good wipe down. Give them a spritz of deodorant or baking soda to block out smells that can grow overtime.

Winter coats: Dry-clean or wash you coats and jackets before placing them into storage. Double-check your pockets – you don’t want to find a melted candy bar in there four months from now. Some fabrics (like furs or natural fibers) may be sensitive to temperature changes so consider getting a climate-controlled unit if you have an expensive winter wardrobe.

Warm sweaters: Don’t hang your sweaters up – ever! If you want your cozy sweaters to look great after being in storage, make sure to lay them out and cover them in plastic. If you’re worried about mites or moths, place mothballs in the container where you’re storing the sweaters. Just be sure they aren’t touching your clothes!

Winter accessories: Scarves, hats, mittens, and goves are all vital during the cold months but in summer they just get in the way. Be sure to keep your winter accessories together so none of them get misplaced. Label the box too!

Outdoor gear

You can free up a ton of space at your home or garage just by storing your winter gear. Uses shelving in your storage unit to organize smaller items, and use pallets or boards to elevate larger items off the ground.

Skis and snowboards: Take advantage of the sunshine and jump on some warm weather sports like wind surfing or skateboarding! Make room for your summer toys by storing your skis and snowboards and consider a temperature-controlled unit to help protect the laminate on them.

Snowmobiles: A snowmobile is probably the most winter bulky item possible when you’re trying to enjoy your summer recreation. Do your garage a favor and put those big winter toys into storage. Give it a nice tune-up and polish before storing it and keep it covered in plastic to protect the engine from dust.

Sleds: Everyone loves sleds – especially kids! – but they are bulky and take up a ton of space and aren’t particularly useful in the summer months. You can easily store your sleds with simple shelving or wall hooks – that way you won’t waste any additional space in your storage unit.

Snow gear: Another great idea is storing snow gear like shovels and salt for the ice. These items are very important for safety, though, so keep them towards the front for easy access – and don’t wait until it starts to snow to take them out of storage! It’s important to keep your gear together, so you don’t need to go looking for things later.

Your inner Marie Kondo will thank you for this simple way of decluttering your home and setting yourself up for some real summer fun! With all the extra space, you can get some gear for summer sports (maybe a surfboard or a jet ski?). Either way, make sure you have a secure spot to hold your belongings when you’re not using them.
